1. Open Multiple Pages on Startup

Rather than just one trusty homepage, you can get Chrome to open several pages as it starts up, giving you instant access to whatever sites and services you prefer to start your day with.
It’s easy to setup. Just click on the wrench icon on the top right of your browser window, select “Options” and under the “Basic” tab check the box where it says “on startup… open the following pages.”
If you click “Add” it brings up a list of recently browsed sites to choose from, or you can manually enter a URL in the box at the top.
Now, the next time you fire up your browser, those pages will be automatically loaded in the order in which you entered them, saving you some precious time.

2. Pin Tabs in Place on the Browser Bar

If you are going to be using a site or service a lot in one web session, you can “pin” a tab in Chrome, which will shrink the window down to the size of the favicon, leaving more room for multi-tasking. It also prevents tabs from getting lost on the side of the screen when you have many open at once.
To do this, right-click on the tab you want to pin and hit “Pin tab.” To enlarge the tab, just right-click and hit “Pin tab” again to uncheck the option.

3. Turn Your Favorite Websites into “Desktop Apps”

There’s another option open to you in Chrome if you want fast access to a favorite site — turn the site into what could be loosely described as a desktop app.
To do this, navigate to the site you want to desktop-ize, head over to the wrench icon on the top right of your browser window, select “Tools” and then click on “Create application shortcuts.”
This will then bring up a window that gives you the option to create shortcuts on your desktop, in your start menu, or on the quick launch bar and you can check or un-check the boxes to make your selection.
If you opt for desktop you’ll instantly see an icon for the site appear on your desktop display, as per the grab below:

Now, double-clicking on that icon will load up that website in a separate window with no navigation tabs, giving it the feel of a native desktop application — so it could be great for webmail services.

4. Add a Home Button to the Toolbar

Chrome boasts a minimalist design that many love, but there are some users who just need to have a “home” button to click.
Adding a home button to Chrome is very easy — just click on the wrench icon at the top-right, select “Options,” and under the basic tab you’ll see a check box for “show Home button on the toolbar.” Hit it and you’ll never be homeless again.

5. Carry Out Calculations in the Omnibox

In addition to being a URL bar and a search field, Chrome’s “omnibox” is also a basic calculator. Rather than load up your computer’s calculator, Google or Wolfram Alpha, you can just type your mathematical query into the omnibox and the result will show up where you’d normally see auto-suggestions.
Beyond simple sums, this also works for unit conversions like feet-to-meters, pints-to-liters, etc,.

6. Use AutoFill to Auto-Complete an Address

If you find yourself typing your address time and time again, you might want to consider Chrome’s AutoFill options which can remember it and save you the repeat effort.
To activate the feature, click on the wrench icon, select “Options,” then click on the “Personal Stuff,” then choose “AutoFill options.” By selecting “Add address,” you can enter your details. The next time you are presented with a form, you won’t have to manually type it all in.
You can also choose to add a credit card via AutoFill, but for security reasons we’d advise thinking twice before going down that route.

7. Use Chrome URLs to See History, Bookmarks & Downloads

Chrome can show you some of your browser data and settings via special Chrome URLs, which is a handy way to see the info in your browser — especially as all options are searchable.
You can view your bookmarks, downloads and history by typing “chrome://bookmarks,” “chrome://downloads,” or “chrome://history” in the omnibox.

8. Make a Favicon-Only Bookmarks Bar

There’s yet another cool way to get quick access to your favorite, or most-visited sites in Chrome. Plus, it looks pretty cool.
You can get Chrome to display your bookmarked sites in the toolbar, but by deleting the site’s name from the bookmark settings, the browser will just show the site’s favicons, making for a colorful display along the top of your window.
To get this going, you’ll first need to make sure you have the bookmarks bar displayed. You can check this by clicking the wrench icon, selecting “Tools” and then ticking “Always show bookmarks bar.”
Once you’ve done this, as you add new sites to your bookmarks, be sure to delete the text in the name box, as per the screen shot below, for a favicon-only list.

Alternatively, to edit existing bookmarks so that they display favicon-only, go to “chrome://bookmarks,” right-click on the bookmark, select “Edit” and then delete the text in the name box.

To add the bookmarks to your bookmark bar, simply drag and drop them from your bookmarks list.

9. Sync Your Chrome Settings to Your Google Account

This isn’t the most exciting tip, but it’s darn useful if you work or play across multiple computers. You can sync your Chrome settings to your Google account so all those preferences you’ve taken time to set up, and all the bookmarks you’ve saved along the way, will follow you wherever you go online.
Simply click the wrench icon, go to “Options” and under “Personal Stuff” you can “Set up sync” by signing in to your Google account. This will now mean all your Chrome settings will sync wherever you sign in with your Google account.

10. Play a Trick on Your Chrome-Using Buddies

If you’ve a buddy or a work-mate who uses Chrome, you can use the “developer tools” functionality to play a really clever trick on them, should they step away from their computer at any time.
When on a webpage, right-click and choose “Inspect element.” This will split the screen to view the page code. In this view, you can select and over-type the text that appears on the page and replace it with wording of your own choosing, or even change measurements, colors, etc. if you’ve got a basic grasp of HTML.

Here are a few more familiar webpages we “edited” via the “Inspect element” function. As you can imagine, a sneaky couple of minutes at a friend’s computer as they wander off for a comfort break and you could really have them going.
If you do both activities, get a pair for each one.
Know your foot. Sure, we've all got 10 toes and two heels, but beyond that, feet come in a variety of shapes -- and knowing your foot's particular quirks is key to selecting the right pair of shoes. Most major brands now offer a model to suit every foot type.
One way to determine your foot's shape is to do a "wet test"--- wet your foot, step on a piece of brown paper and trace your footprint. Or just look at where your last pair of shoes shows the most wear.
If your footprint shows the entire sole of your foot with little to no curve on the inside -- or if your shoes show the most wear on the inside edge -- it means you've got low arches or flat feet and tend toward overpronation -- meaning your feet roll inward. Overpronation can create extra wear on the outside heel and inside forefoot. You'll want a shoe with a motion-control feature and maximum support.
If the footprint shows only a portion of your forefoot and heel with a narrow connection between the two -- or if your shoes wear out mostly on the outside edge -- you have high arches and tend to underpronate (also called supinate), meaning your feet roll outward. Underpronation causes wear on the outer edge of the heel and the little toe. Look for a cushioned shoe with a soft midsole.
You have a neutral arch if your footprint has a distinct curve along the inside and your shoes wear out uniformly. Look for a "stability" shoe, which has the right mix of cushioning and support.

Feet Change
Measure your foot frequently. "It's a myth that foot size doesn't change in adults," says Steven Raiken, MD. "It does change as we get older, so have your feet measured twice a year. Sizes also vary between brands, so go by what fits, not by what size the shoe is." Raiken is director of the foot and ankle service at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Shop toward the end of the day. Feet swell over the course of the day; they also expand while you run or walk, so shoes should fit your feet when they're at their largest.
Bring your own socks -- the ones you wear while running or walking. If you wear orthotics, bring those, too. Shoes need to fit with the orthotic inside.
Don't believe in breaking in. Running and walking shoes should feel comfortable right away, Raiken tells WebMD. Walk or run around the store a bit to make sure they feel good in action.
Use the rule of thumb. There should be about 3/8-1/2 inch between the front of your big toe and the end of the shoe -- about a thumb's width. The heel should fit relatively tightly; your heel should not slip out when you walk. The upper part of the shoe -- which goes over the top of your foot -- should be snug and secure, and not too tight anywhere. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons writes that when fitting in to an athletic shoe you should be able to freely wiggly all of your toes when the shoe is on.
Understand the bells and whistles. Some models of running shoes look better suited to a space mission than a run in the park, but some of those groovy-looking features actually serve a purpose. Clear inserts, filled with gel, Freon, or air, provide extra shock absorption, as do those springy-looking things. These features are especially good for people who tend to get heel pain, says Raiken, and not so good for people whose ankles twist easily, as shoes with extra cushioning tend to provide less traction.
Some shoes allow you to pump up the tongue, which lets people with difficult-to-fit feet achieve a more customized fit.
Don't over- or underpay. Good-quality running and walking shoes are fairly pricey -- and usually worth it. "A $15-shoe will not be as good as an $80-shoe," says Raiken. But you'll pay a premium for super-fashionable styles or those associated with a celebrity -- and they won't be any better for your feet.
Know when to replace them. The average pair of running shoes should be replaced after about 350-400 miles of use, says Clifford Jeng, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. Better yet, go by how your shoes look and feel. Once the back of the sole is worn out or the shoe feels uncomfortable or less supportive, it's time to take those tootsies shopping again.

With this tutorial you will be able to explore the hidden speed of Firefox which will boost the speed of Firefox and make your Firefox much more faster

Download the latest version of Firefox from here. Now install the Firefox.

To speed up Firefox follow these steps.

01. Type about:config in the address bar and then press Enter.

And you will see a confirmation message like this:

Now click I'll be careful, I promise!

02. You will see a label there Filter, just next to it type network.http.pipelining. Now be sure the value field is set true, if not double-click to set true.

Info: HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most web pages are transferred with. In HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it!

03. Go back to the Filter search bar and type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Double-click this option and set its value to 8.

04. In the Filter search bar and type network.http.proxy.pipelining Once opened double-click on it and set it to true.

05. Type network.dns.disableIPv6 in the filter search bar and set this option to true by double clicking on it.

Info: In IPv6-capable DNS servers, an IPv4 address may be returned when an IPv6 address is requested. It is possible for Mozilla to recover from this misinformation, but a significant delay is introduced.

06. CONTENT INTERRUPT PARSING
This preference controls if the application will interrupt parsing a page to respond to UI events. It does not exist by default.
Right-click (Apple users ctrl+click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu. Then:

07. Rather than wait until a page has completely downloaded to display it to the user, Mozilla applications will regularly render what has been received to that point. This option controls the maximum amount of time the application will be unresponsive while rendering pages.

Right-click (Apple users ctrl+click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.

10. Notify Backoffcount
This option controls the maximum number of times the content will do timer-based reflows. After this number has been reached, the page will only reflow once it is finished downloading. Right-click (Apple users ctrl+click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.

11. CONTENT SWITCH THRESHOLD
You can interact with a loading page when content.interrupt.parsing is set to true. When a page is loading, the application has two modes: a high frequency interrupt mode and a low frequency interrupt mode. The first one interrupts the parser more frequently to allow for greater UI responsiveness during page load.

The low frequency interrupt mode interrupts the parser less frequently to allow for quicker page load. The application enters high frequency interrupt mode when you move the mouse or type on the keyboard and switch back to low frequency mode when you had no activity for a certain amount of time. This preference controls that amount of time. Right-click (Apple users ctrl+click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.

A. Enter content.switch.threshold in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.

B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.

12. NGLAYOUT INITIALPAINT DELAY
Mozilla applications render web pages incrementally, they display what??™s been received of a page before the entire page has been downloaded. Since the start of a web page normally doesn't have much useful information to display, Mozilla applications will wait a short interval before first rendering a page. This preference controls that interval. Right-click (Apple users ctrl+click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.

A. Enter nglayout.initialpaint.delay in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.

B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 0 and click OK.

That's it! Now restart Firefox and your browsing as well as downloading speed will be much more faster. Good luck.
Memory іѕ іmрοrtаnt іn ουr lives. It wіƖƖ nοt οnƖу tеƖƖ υѕ whο wе аrе аnԁ remind υѕ οf thе things thаt hаνе happened іn ουr lives, іt wіƖƖ аƖѕο give υѕ thе knowledge thаt wе need tο survive. Wе υѕе memory whеn wе learn nеw lessons іn school οr whеn wе аrе studying fοr аn exam. Wе аƖѕο need аn ехсеƖƖеnt memory whеn socializing. People whο саn remember names аnԁ people appear tο bе warmer аnԁ аrе better conversationalists thаn people whο аrе forgetful. Thus іt іѕ іmрοrtаnt thаt уου ѕtаrt bettering уουr memory.
Below аrе ѕοmе tips οn hοw tο improve уουr memory. Sοmе уου саn ԁο tο improve уουr brain’s function whіƖе thе others аrе preventive measures thаt wіƖƖ hеƖр уου hаνе ɡrеаt memory skills even аftеr οƖԁ age.
1. Change уουr lifestyle
Aѕ far-fetched аѕ іt seems, whаt уου ԁο wіth уουr life саn affect уουr memory. Thus, people whο want tο better thеіr memory ԁο nοt οnƖу try out memory techniques bυt аƖѕο change thеіr whole lifestyle. Yου саn ѕtаrt bу avoiding vices thаt wіƖƖ hυrt уουr brain processes. Thіѕ includes smoking аnԁ drinking beyond thе one bottle a day limit fοr women аnԁ two bottles a day fοr men. Thіѕ іѕ οf course fοr beers οnƖу.
Stress іѕ another factor thаt саn lessen уουr memory skills. Stress hаνе bееn shown tο nοt οnƖу weaken thе body аnԁ thе immune system bυt аƖѕο tο weaken thе mental processes. Sіnсе stress саnnοt really bе avoided, уου need tο mаkе sure thаt уου find ways tο relax аnԁ curtail stress. Yου саn ԁο thіѕ bу resting уουr head οn weekends аnԁ having enough sleep everyday. Yου ѕhουƖԁ аƖѕο ѕtаrt exercising аnԁ meditating whісh аrе both ɡοοԁ fοr thе brain.
2. Change уουr diet
Whаt уου eat wіƖƖ determine whο уου аrе. Thіѕ mау bе a cliché bυt іt іѕ trυе nonetheless. If уου want tο hаνе a more powerful brain, уου ѕhουƖԁ mаkе sure thаt уου include іn уουr diet whаt іѕ οftеn called thе brain foods. Thеѕе аrе foods thаt contain choline аnԁ proteins whісh hеƖр іn thе development οf thе brain. Examples οf thеѕе brain foods аrе tuna, salmon аnԁ οthеr fishes; soya, tofu, milk, peanuts аnԁ meat whісh аrе rich іn proteins. Veggies аnԁ fruits аƖѕο hеƖр bу keeping thе body strong аnԁ rich іn supply οf anti-oxidants. Young children іn fact аrе encouraged tο eat lots οf thеѕе foods especially аt thаt age whеn thеіr brains аrе still developing.
3. Exercise уουr mind
One οf thе reasons whу thе brain slows down іѕ bесаυѕе іt іѕ nοt used аѕ οftеn аѕ іt ѕhουƖԁ bе used. Thеrе аrе studies іn fact thаt support thіѕ. People whο аnѕwеr crossword puzzles, play strategic games аnԁ work even whеn thеу аrе οƖԁ аrе less ƖіkеƖу tο hаνе Alzheimer’s. Thе υѕе οf thе brain іѕ actually a preventive measure fοr thе onset οf forgetfulness during οƖԁ age.
4. Uѕе memory techniques
Yουr brain аƖѕο needs уου hеƖр. It ԁοеѕ nοt mean thаt іf уουr brain іѕ powerful, уου wіƖƖ nοt mаkе thе job easy fοr іt. If уου want tο better уουr memory, υѕе memory techniques thаt wіƖƖ hеƖр уου remember more. One example іѕ thе υѕе οf mnemonics, οr key letters οr words thаt wіƖƖ represent a whole lot οf information. Another memory technique іѕ thе association, whісh allows уου tο associate аn information οr item wіth something thаt уου саn already see οr whаt уου already know.Silverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04599257849180366589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751467725300644977.post-23375199399024159982011-06-01T15:34:00.000-07:002011-06-01T15:42:00.174-07:00Super Collection of Tips for Dogs and Cats
1. Is Your Dog Regularly Getting the Runs? Add bio yoghurt to their feed. Quite often this can be a bacterial imbalance. Especially if it is happening on a regular basis. The bio yoghurt is a probiotic and sometimes sorts this type of problem out fairly quickly. However if the situation continues to occur see your Vet.

2. Is Your Dog’s Urine Burning the Lawn? Yellow spots on the lawn are normally caused by urine, Nitrogen waste products are the result of protein breakdown through normal bodily processes., therefore the nitrogen in the urine causes the lawn spots. We all know that Nitrogen is a great fertliser but not in these doses that is why the outside of the brown spot is quite lush.

A dose of one teaspoon to one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (depending on the size of the dog) per day will nullify the Nitrogen imbalance and should solve the problem. The apple cider vinegar can be added to the dog's water or put directly on his food. The natural type from a health food store, not the pasteurised version from the supermarket. I find the apple cider vinegar from horse tack shops are the best. Two tablespoons of tomato juice on the dog's food twice a day will have the same effect.

If the dogs has already urinated and she has not been treated, then saturate the urinated areas (spots) with water. This will allow the excess nitrogen to leech or dilute through the lawn and reduce the concentration in one area. It is usually best to treat the areas up to 9 hours after urination and to apply at least three times the amount of water to urine to the area.

There is also something called DOG ROCKS which are an Australian/New Zealand product that are apparently safe for all of your pets, young and old. It is supposed to start improving your lawn within 5 weeks. They normally need to be replaced about every 2 or 3 months and should be placed into no more than 2 litres (0.5 gal) of water. Dog rocks are a mineralised rock which when placed in a dog’s water bowl changes the Nitrogen levels of a dog’s urine, meaning it won’t stain grass. The key element is Zeolite, which neutralises Nitrogen levels without altering the pH level of the water

3. Insect Stings to Dogs or Cats: Slice a raw onion and apply to the sting as soon as possible, If the sting is inside the mouth always keep "Antihistamine" capsules in your first aid kit. A rapid administration soon after the sting can prevent serious complications. You can also get Antihistamine in liquid form which makes it easier to dispense. To administer liquids pull out the jowl near the back teeth it makes a sort of little cup, then just pour the measured liquid in, close mouth, tip head back and massage throat.

Some dogs will actually swallow the insect live, which may continue stinging the dog internally and cause anaphylactic shock. In rare cases, death can result. This is caused from internal swelling of the trachea which cuts off the oxygen supply to the lungs. Quick administration of “Antihistamine" can reduce and even prevent serious complications. SPECIAL NOTE - Dosage will vary depending on the size of the animal. Check with your vet for recommended dosage. Usually they will refer to the animal's weight as a guideline.

4. Sharp Object and Glass eating: What do you do if your dog eats glass or other sharp objects like staples or small nails etc? Dogs even eat ornaments, Xmas decorations, light bulbs and lots of other things that are sharp and therefore dangerous. Here's what to do. Go to the chemist and buy some cotton balls, make sure it is cotton balls and not the cosmetic puff things they are made of man made fibres. Buy a carton of double cream and keep it in the freezer if in the eventuality of your dog eating something sharp. Defrost the cream and pour some in a bowl. Dip cotton balls into the cream and feed them to your dog. Dogs less than 10 lbs should eat 2 balls which you have first torn into smaller pieces. Dogs 10-50 lbs should eat 3-5 balls and larger dogs should eat 5-7. You may feed larger dogs an entire cotton ball at once. Dogs seem to really like these strange treats and eat them readily.

As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will find all the glass and small sharp objects and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards of glass will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibres and the cotton will protect the intestines from damage.Your dog's stools will be a bit strange for a few days. You must be careful to check for fresh blood or a tarry appearance to the stool. If either of the latter symptoms appear you should rush your dog to the vet for a check-up, but in most cases, the dogs should be fine.

5. Bonding: If you want to quickly bond with a new pup or rescue dog. Masticate a piece of white bread till it is a gooey then feed this as a tit bit to the pup/dog for the first 7 days. You only need to do this once a day; it mimics the regurgitation process when pups and cubs are being weaned in the wild, this really helps them bond more quickly and therefore settle in much sooner.

6. Constipation: If your dog doesn't move his bowels for a day or two, or if he seems to have difficulty doing so, he may be constipated. Give him a teaspoonful of milk of magnesia first thing in the morning, before his breakfast if you feed him twice a day. If he is often constipated, add more vegetables to his diet and also mix a teaspoonful of mineral oil in his dinner. He won't taste it with the food. Do this until he is regular again. Also be sure that he gets plenty of exercise. Lack of running, walking, and jumping can make a dog constipated. If this treatment does not work within 48 hours consult your Vet.

7. Car Sickness: Often Ginger helps with this problem either Ginger Biscuits or even better natural ginger fed before the journey. The biscuits can be fed as the dog gets in the car, which has an added incentive of the dog feeling that it being praised for just getting in the vehicle.

8. Grooming: Once a week put a really good shake of Olive Oil "the one you use for salads" into the dogs food, it gives the coat a brilliant shiny healthy look. In conjunction with the oil use a rubber horse curry comb/ brush; you can purchase it cheaply from any tack shop, strips all the dead hair off and shines up the coat better than any other brush on the market. They also do a plastic one that gets all the seeds and bits of debris out. I use both to great affect.

 9. Grooming 2: Irrespective of the dogs coat long or short groom daily. Even if it's only for a couple of minutes and make sure you groom over the withers. This helps in bonding and social status. In the wild the Alpha Male and Female will call over the other wolves or wild dogs individually and groom them in their pecking order. Grooming is an important social gesture. That is why some dominant dogs object to being groomed, they don't believe you have right or the position to initiate this action.

10. Tears Stains and Bacterial Infections: Wet areas on the face are a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. Bacterial infections commonly occur in the tear ducts. “Ptirsporum”, red yeast bacteria, is at the root of most yeast infections. Tear stains also often occur at the same time as a gum infection or ear infection. Staining can also occur on a dog's paws from licking and around his mouth from infected saliva. Apple cider vinegar (in its natural form from a health food store, not the pasteurised version from the Supermarket) is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, and deodorant; It helps digestion and to remove tooth tartar; prevents tooth decay and hair loss (even mange), it also prevents and heals gum disease and skin problems; and will discourage fleas. Putting a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar per quart of water in your dog's water bowl or on food can clear up most active yeast infections and prevent future infections. Apple cider vinegar tablets can be used if your dog refuses to drink the treated water or eat the food.

11. Halitosis/Dog Breath: Halitosis, or unpleasant breath, can be caused by a stomach problem, bad teeth or tonsils, or something that is stuck in the dog's mouth or throat. Look your dog’s teeth to see if any are decayed. If not, then give him 3/4 teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda in his food twice a day for a few days. If his breath is still offensive, then take him to a vet to see if he needs his teeth cleaned or his tonsils treated.

12. Cuts. : If your dog cuts himself slightly, put some boric acid solution or some peroxide on the cut and then leave it alone. It will heal up quickly. If the cut is deep, or if it doesn't stop bleeding, pack gauze or clean rags around it and take him to a vet. If the cut is on his leg or foot and bleeds a lot, tie a piece of cloth tightly around his leg, between the cut and his body, release the pressure every ten minutes, and take him to a vet at once.

13. Electric Shocks: Once in a while, a silly puppy will chew through an electric cord leading to a lamp or a radio or a toaster. The shock he gets is normally not serious (though in certain circumstances has proved fatal); however it can sometimes be strong enough to knock him out. If this happens, put a little household ammonia on a wad of cotton and hold this under his nose. Don't touch the nose with it, as the ammonia will burn his skin. The sharp odour will bring him round. When he does comes to, give him some cool, strong, black coffee to drink. If his mouth seems burned by the shock, wet a cloth in strong, cool tea and wash the burned place with this. Take him to the vet if he seems burned or injured in any way.

14. What if your dog swallows a dangerous object: It's a rare puppy that doesn't swallow at least one strange object which his stomach cannot possibly digest. But a dog's stomach is so constructed that it can usually take care of most of the odd things that find their way into it.

If you should see your dog swallow something you know is bad for him . . . a piece of rubber toy, a ball, a large splinter of bone or a metallic object . . . here's what to do. Give him a large piece of soft bread to eat. Then toss about two teaspoonfuls of salt on the back of his tongue, close his mouth with your hand and keep it closed until he swallows the salt. Now put him on a newspaper or some other place where he can vomit without doing any damage.

In a short time the salt will cause him to throw up the bread and the hopefully the strange object. If this doesn't come up the first time give him another dose of salt after about 5 minutes. Once the object is vomited, He should be fine. However if he begins to have diarrhoea, or if his stomach swells up and appears tender when you touch it, give him a tablespoonful of mineral oil. If he still seems to be in pain, or if there is any blood in his urine or bowel movement, take him straight to a vet. Never induce vomiting if the dog has ingested bleach or anything acidic or really sharp. Washing soda crystals are even more effective than salt if you have them available in the house.

15. Eyes: If you want to clean out the "sleep bugs," you can dip a wad of cotton into a mixture of warm water and boric-acid solution 50/50. Squeeze a few drops of this in each eye. You can also use plain warm milk for this purpose. If your pet has got some mild conjunctivitis try warm used tea bags, if the infection is more than mild then purchase some Golden Eye from the chemist (cream not drops) and treat for three days this clears up most infections, however if he still has problems a visit to the Vet is in order. In case of a real injury to the eyes from a dogfight or something poked into them, put a pad of gauze soaked in boric-acid solution 50/50 ie warm water and boric acid over the eye that's hurt. Then wrap a towel loosely around the dog's head and take him at once to a vet.

16. Commands: Avoid giving your dog commands that you know you cannot enforce. Every time you give a command that is neither complied with nor enforced your dog learns that commands are optional. One command should equal one response, so give your dog only one command (twice max!), then gently enforce it. Repeating commands tunes your dog out (as does nagging) and teaches your dog that the first several commands are a "bluff '. For instance, telling your dog to "Sit, sit, sit, sit!", is neither an efficient nor effective way to issue commands. Simply give your dog a single "Sit" command and gently place or lure your dog into the sit position, then praise/reward.

17. The Dogs Name: Whenever possible, use your dog's name positively, rather than using it in conjunction with a reprimand, warning or punishment. Your dog should trust that when it hears its name or is called to you, good things happen. His name should always be positive and responded to with enthusiasm, never hesitancy or fear. Imagine if you were a dog and 50% of the time when your name was spoken, you were yelled at or chastised. It would not take long to work out not to look up if their is a strong chance you are going to be shouted at, you can picture the dog thinking “Look at my paw because my face ain’t listening” I use "Bad" or "You" If I have to chastise or stop the dog from certain behaviour's both have a good growly tone rather than using the dogs name.

To teach your dog his name. Position your dog in the middle of two people, close enough to touch,. Get some treats, high value ones like cheese or liver. Say the dogs name cheerfully if he doesn't’t respond either touch his ear or his muzzle very gently.

When the dog finally looks in your direction immediately use your Good Dog voice, and praise by using the word “good”“take it” then immediately give a high quality treat. You could also use a clicker and click treat. Practice this until looking at you happens without the touch or treat, this takes about five days doing the exercise for a few minutes each day, continue to practice once a week for the dog's entire life! It reinforces the communication link between owner and pet.

18. Pee Poles: These are very new in the pet shops and are made of hard plastic and look almost like a 1 foot high giant tack. The tack is impregnated with a Pheromone that causes the dogs and bitches to urinate on them. You hammer or push them in the area you want the dog to urinate and hey presto. Believe it or not it appears to work in some cases. Though some dogs decide it is a toy.

19. Puppy Teething: Most of the teething and chewing as apart from mouthing and nipping starts at about 4.5 months old. This is the time that the little piranha teeth laughingly called puppy teeth start dropping out, as the new adult teeth start pushing through. It takes anything up to 8 months for these new teeth to set in the jaw, whilst this is happening the pup has a need to chew. To help soothe this and save your fixtures, fittings and furniture. Get the pup a plastic flower pot. Not the thin brittle ones but a fairly thick substantial one, this will help his gums and sooth the itching. Another great help is get a knotted rope you buy as a tug soak it in water and put it in the freezer. The ice that forms really helps hot and itchy gums. Also freeze carrots and whilst frozen give to teething pups a great and nutritious soother.

20. Games of Tug: I don’t like games of tug at any time, except with a particularly timid or frightened dog then I will play and let the dog win to build up some confidence. However I never ever play tug with a puppy whilst it has its puppy/piranha teeth. It actually has little or no jaw muscles at this time therefore you can dislocate the jaw or even misalign the teeth by playing roughhouse tug games. You may also be setting the scene for aggressive confrontations later in the puppy’s growth cycle. I would be better playing games of find, hide little bits of treats in the house and garden and encourage the dog to search them out, or ball games these all help dispel some of the pup’s energies and to stimulate the mind.

I had an altercation with a forum called Champ Dogs, run and controlled by people that clearly think they know lots about Dogs but in reality know very little. Everything was based on emotion, rather than reality and common sense. I found some of the advice dangerous. I was howled down when I suggested that they should not play tug with their dogs they actually said that if you couldn't play games like that then it's not worth having a dog and they would have it put to sleep. Some of these people are very very sad.
Silverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04599257849180366589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751467725300644977.post-59846895439857408382011-06-01T09:41:00.001-07:002011-06-01T09:41:43.429-07:00Tricks Increase Alexa Rank

If you have a blog or website, perhaps you also know the Alexa Rank, which is used to measure web traffic or blog. Designers use technique they are most confident as well as comfortable with, which is great because it’s always useful to peek into the workflow of our colleagues and learn new design approaches. We have had articles on cloning, compositing, masks and obscure Photoshop time-savers in the past. This article is different.
I’ll be covering some of the useful techniques and tricks which I’ve learned from my experience. You may know some of them, but hopefully not all of them. All images used in this article were purchased and are used according to their licenses. The second part of this post will be published in 2 weeks.
Here is a short overview of the techniques we’ll be covering:

Naturally Increased Light

Simulate Infrared Images

Levels

Color Look With An Adjustment Layer

Controlling Mid-Tone Contrasts

Sunset

Creating Smiles

Colorful Water Drops

Skin Color

Matching Skin Tones

Reducing Noise

Retro Look With Curves

Identifying Layers

Conserving Resources

Classy Sepia Look

Precise Positioning

Applying Layer Styles Multiple Times

Naturally Increased Light
The light of the sun creates texture. There are shadowy areas and spots where the sunlight can shine without interference. To control the intensity, you can draw more light onto a separate layer or increase already existing light. Create a new layer by going to Layer → New → Layer, or by pressing
Shift + Control + N
on Windows or
Shift + Command + N
on a Mac. Set the blending mode to “Color Dodge” and the opacity to about 15%.

Increase light on a separate layer.
Then use the brush tool with a soft brush, and hold the
Alt/Option
key to pick up colors from the area that you want to brighten. Continue to brush in some light, picking up appropriate colors if the background changes. This way, you increase not only the light, but the saturation, which makes for more realistic results.

The blending mode “Color Dodge” creates realistic results.

Simulate Infrared Images
Open a photo in Camera Raw; you can do this either in Bridge, using the right mouse key and clicking “Open in Camera Raw,” or directly in Photoshop, by selecting File → Open as Smart Object. Apply basic adjustments to optimize your image (for example, with the “Recovery” and “Fill Light” slides), then switch to the “HSL/Grayscale” tab. Check “Convert to Grayscale,” and set the Blues down to around -85. Set the Greens to +90 and the Yellows to +20.
Trees and bushes should now shine in the typical white, and the sky should appear almost black. If you want to go on and simulate some grain, switch to the “Effects” tab, and enter 15 for the amount, 20 for size and 80 for roughness. You could also apply a “Vignette.” Here I used -30 for the amount, 40 for the midpoint and -35 for roundness.

It’s almost like an infrared image.

Levels
When applying a “Levels adjustment,” you can set black and white points in order to decrease color tints, but where are the darkest and brightest spots in the image? Go to New Adjustment Layer → Threshold to find those areas. This function is available under the “Layer” menu.
Move the slider so far to the right that only a few white spots remain in the document. Use the “Color Sampler tool” and set down a point there. Move the slider to the left until only a few black spots remain, and set a second point down there.
One could also find a neutral gray in the image by using a “Threshold adjustment layer.” Add a new blank layer between the original image and the threshold adjustment layer, and fill this layer with 50% gray. Go to Edit → Fill or press
Shift + F5
, then select “50% Gray” under “Contents” and click “OK.”

Here is the threshold adjustment layer at work.
Change the blending mode of this layer to “Difference.” Select the “Threshold adjustment layer” again and move the slider all the way to the left. Slowly move the slider back to the right until black dots start to appear. These are the neutral gray areas in the image (if neutral grays are present). Add a “Color Sampler spot.”
Now delete both the threshold adjustment layer and the 50% gray layer. Create a new adjustment layer, “Levels.” Use the first Eyedropper tool to click on the darkest area, then use the third Eyedropper on the brightest area.

Here’s a before-and-after comparison.
Now you can use the gray Eyedropper tool on the third Color Sampler spot. The color tint will be decreased. Color Sampler spots can be deleted by dragging them off the canvas with the Color Sampler tool.

Color Look With An Adjustment Layer
Go to the Layer menu, and then New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation, and set the blending mode to “Soft Light” and check “Colorize.” Use the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders to control the color: for a cool look, for example, set the hue at 210, the saturation at 50 and the lightness at 10; for a warm look, set the hue at 30, the saturation at 30 and the lightness at 5.

Here is Hue/Saturation and Color Fill.
Alternatively, you could use several color layers. Create them from the layer palette with the “New Fill/Adjustment Layer” button. Choose a color, then set the blending mode to “Vivid Light.” Reduce the opacity to about 12%, and invert the layer mask with
Control/Command + I
. Paint in the colored light with a big brush and white color. This works especially well for the lighting in portraits that have a textured background.

Here’s the Color Look with an Adjustment Layer.

Controlling Mid-Tone Contrasts
To increase detail in landscape shots, boost the mid-tone contrast. Copy the background layer with
Control/Command + J
, and then click on Filter → Convert for Smart Filters in the menu. Then go to Filter → Other → High Pass and enter a radius of 3 pixels. Change the blending mode to “Overlay” and double-click the layer next to its name to open the “Layer Style” window.

Layer Style window: This Layer
For the first gradient, “This Layer,” split the sliders by holding the
Alt/Option key
and trim the layer effect to the “50/100” and “150/200” ranges. As soon as you move the sliders, you’ll see where those numbers are. This increases contrast only for the mid-tones. Double-click the “High Pass” filter in the layer palette to bring the dialog box up again in order to adjust the radius to your liking.

Check out these mid-tone contrasts.

Sunset
A sunset, especially at sea, can be an amazing color spectacle. The hues will depend heavily on the weather, though — but you can push them a bit with a gradient map. Click on the “New Fill/Adjustment Layer” button in the Layer palette and select “Gradient Map” from the list. Click on the gradient to open the “Gradient Editor.”

Gradient Map
Click on the first color patch below the gradient, and change the color to red. Set the color patch on the opposite side to yellow, and click “OK.” Set the blending mode to “Soft Light” and reduce the opacity to about 50%. This will create a warm, almost golden sunset.

Observe the movement from a blue to a golden sunset.

Creating Smiles
Roughly select the area around the mouth with the Polygon Lasso tool. Go to Select → Modify → Feather, and enter a radius of 10 pixels. Confirm, then click on Layer → New → Layer via Copy (or press
Control/Command + J
), then Edit → Puppet Warp. Photoshop will put a mesh over the entire layer in the shape of your previous selection.

Here’s the mesh over the layer.
You can control the size of the mesh with the “Expansion” value in the Options bar. Increase the density to “More Points” for increased precision. Press
Control/Command + H
to hide the mesh, then set the first pins to the corners of the mouth. Add more pins to distinctive spots of the mouth. By clicking and dragging the mesh, you can shape a nice smile.

Colorful Water Drops
Macro shots of water drops are appealing, and shapes can be further accentuated with discreet coloring. You could treat the bland surface with a linear gradient from
#772222
(RGB 119, 34, 34) to
#3333bb
(RGB 51, 51, 187). If the photo is on a layer of its own, click on Layer → Layer Style → Gradient Overlay or double-click the layer next to its name.

Layer Style: Gradient Overlay
Set the blend mode to Color, the opacity to 50%, the gradient to “Foreground to background color” and the angle to 90%. The gradient will be saved as a layer style, so you can come back at any time to adjust the values. Double-clicking the style name opens up the dialog window once more.

See the colorful drops with optimized colors.

Skin Color
If the skin is not quite perfect after retouching, it might be because of the general hue. You can control it by going to New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation. Click on the miniature mask, and press
Control/Command + I
to invert the mask.

Adjustment Layer: Hue/Saturation
Using white color and a soft brush, paint over the skin areas so that only they get treated. For the adjustment, switch from Standard to “Reds” (found in the Hue drop-down menu of the Adjustment layer), and use the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders to adjust the skin color. Switch to “Yellows” and optimize the skin tone. Getting the colors exactly right depends very much on the image material. Rely on your common sense.

Optimized skin tones

Matching Skin Tones
A sunburn or a blush can disrupt a portrait, especially if there is a contrasting pale person nearby. Photoshop has a tool to correct that: “Match Color” offers control over skin tones. Open your image and use the Quick Selection tool to roughly select the red skin areas.
You can hold down the
Alt/Option
key and subtract areas from the selection. Click on Select → Modify → Feather and enter a value of about 15 pixels. Use the
Control/Command + J
shortcut to copy the selection to a new layer.

Adjustments: Match Color
Using the same technique, copy the non-reddened skin to a new layer. In the next step, you’ll have to differentiate between the source layer and the layer to edit, so rename these two layers meaningfully; all it takes is a double-click on the layer name. You could use the naming scheme shown here and call them “Beautiful skin” and “Reddened skin.”
Activate the layer with the red skin, and select Image → Adjustments → Match Color from the menu. For “Source,” select the current document, and for “Layer,” select the one with the beautiful skin. Control the effect using the “Luminance” and “Color Intensity” sliders in the Image Options area. Once you confirm, you can control the effect’s strength with the Opacity slider.

Paler skin after Match Color

Reducing Noise
Noisy images are annoying. One way to reduce noise is through the channels. Copy the background layer by pressing
Control/Command + J
, switch to the Channels palette, and select the channel that shows the least noise. Drag that channel down to the “New Channel” icon (next to the trash can) and go to Stylize → Find Edges. Then apply a Gaussian Blur with a radius of about 3 pixels.

Look at this copy of the red channel.
Click on the new channel’s miniature icon while holding the Control/Command key to select the content. Activate the “RGB channel” (top-most), and switch back to the Layers palette. When the duplicated background is selected, click on the “Add Layer Mask” icon.
Click on the Layer Miniature icon, and select Filter → Blur → Surface Blur from the menu. Play around with the Radius and Threshold sliders until the noise has been reduced as much as possible. Thanks to the mask you created, the contours are safe.

With and without noise

Retro Look With Curves
Go to Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Curves and switch from RGB to Reds. Then drag the line downwards a little for the shadows and upwards for the highlights, creating a slight “S” curve. Do the same for the Greens. For the Blues, drag the highlights down a little and the shadows up (for an inverted S shape). The shadows should now be slightly blue-ish, the highlights slightly yellow-ish.

Adjustment Layer: Curves
Create a new layer with
Shift + Control/Command + N
, and fill it with
#000066
(RGB 0, 0, 102). Set the blending mode to “Exclusion.” Now copy the background layer by clicking it and pressing
Control/Command + J
. Set the blending mode for this copy to “Soft Light.”
To decrease the effect overall, activate the top-most layer and then click on the background copy while holding the Shift key, thereby selecting both layers. Alternatively, you can add them to a group with
Control/Command + G
. Reduce the layer’s (or group’s) opacity. Note that in Photoshop versions prior to CS5, you’ll have to reduce the opacity for each layer individually.

Achieve a simple retro look in a few steps.

Identifying Layers
If you’re ambitious with your collages, then you’ll be familiar with this problem: meaningful layer names are often neglected during the creative process. This can result in layer names like “Layer 4” and “Layer 5 Copy 2,” which are not very helpful when you need to quickly identify the contents of a layer.
Photoshop offers a number of solutions for our laziness. For example, you can click on the element you want to select by using the “Move tool” and holding the right mouse key; you’ll see which layer contents are below the tool. Photoshop will display a list in a drop-down menu, from which you can easily select the desired element.

Right click with the Move tool

Control/Command + left-click
with the Move tool selected and, in most cases, you’ll select the corresponding layer of the element that your mouse is over (unless Photoshop can’t distinguish between the multiple layers).
You could also
Control/Command + left-click
on a layer’s miniature icon to get a selection of the content of that layer. The marching ants will show you what is on that layer and where it is.
Another option is to click on the Layer palette’s Options icon, in the top-right corner, and select “Layers Palette Options.” From here you can adjust the size of the layer’s miniature preview and concentrate the miniature’s content to the layer’s bounds, which should cut down on future guesswork when it comes to layer contents.
Layers Palette options

Conserving Resources
Plug-ins save time, but they’re a bit resource-hungry; at least, they lengthen Photoshop’s start-up time. Your plug-ins might have functionality that you rarely use, so deactivate them until you need them. To do so, create a new folder by going to Adobe → Adobe Photoshop CS5 (or whatever your version) and name it something like Plugins_deactivated.

After disabling some plug-ins.
Now move all of the extensions that you don’t need for the moment. When you restart Photoshop now, those plug-ins won’t load, so the program will start up quickly. Your RAM will be relieved. Because you neither deleted nor uninstalled the plug-ins, they’re available to use anytime. If you need them, just move them back to the plug-in folder.

Classy Sepia Look
The sepia look is an absolute classic. To enhance a black and white image with a classy sepia tone, follow these steps. Click on Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Photo Filter, and select the Sepia filter, with a density of 100%. Double-click the layer (not the layer name) to open up the Layer Style window. This will show the Blending options.

A view of the Layer Style window.
At the bottom of the dialog box for the first gradient, move the white slider to the left while holding the
Alt/Option
key. This creates a smooth transition between adjusted and unadjusted areas. The sepia will now look elegant.

Subtle sepia

Precise Positioning
I’m sure you’ve often been irritated by Photoshop’s tendency to position elements on its own, but the program is just trying to help you align an element that is on its own layer with the outer edge of the document or with the edge of another object. To your frustration, the layer’s content will jump to the edge, even though you wanted to leave a few pixels of space in between. You can temporarily deactivate the automatic snapping by holding the
Control/Command
key as you position.

A banner, close to the edge.

Applying Layer Styles Multiple Times
Usually, layer styles can be applied only once. For example, if you click on Layer → Layer Style → Drop Shadow, you cannot create a double drop shadow, one of which has an angle of 120°, a distance of 2 pixels and a size of 2 pixels, and the other of which has an angle of 180°, a distance of 12 pixels and a size of 12 pixels.
Actually, it is possible! It just requires a little detour. Create the first drop shadow as you normally would. Then right-click on the layer and select “Convert to Smart Object” from the menu. This smart object can be assigned another drop shadow, and you can convert the smart object into yet another smart object. This way, you can easily add a third and fourth drop shadow. Alternatively, you could apply multiple strokes.

Three shadows in combination.
By the way, to put one or even several styles onto their own layers at once, right-click on the FX symbol and select “Create Layer” from the list. Now you can apply filters to these styles, but they won’t be editable anymore.Silverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04599257849180366589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751467725300644977.post-10821384059478900852011-06-01T07:50:00.000-07:002011-06-01T07:50:18.754-07:00Blog URL changed - how to restore original permalinkWhen you change the URL of a blogspot blog, the permalink (individual post URL) also changes and if the blog already has incoming backlinks, these links will become dead links (page not found). So if you are unhappy about that, what can you do?

I would suggest going back to Blogger dashboard, click SETTINGS then PUBLISHING and change the blog URL back to the original blog URL. Of course you will need to do it fast because that option will not be available any more if another blogger has already registered that URL. If successful, all your original permalinks will be restored.

I have tested it at a test blog Computer Hardware Tips and Tricks and confirmed that after changing the blog URL back to the original, the permalink of the individual post had also been restored.

Conclusion of the test is, if you upload the animated image direct via the Blogger photo upload icon , the image will no longer be animated as you can see from the first image which was uploaded via the via the Blogger photo upload icon in the toolbar of the Blogger post editor.

If you want the image to remain animated, you must first host the animated .gif image with the free Photobucket image host and use HTML to display the animated image. Here is a screenshot of the animated .gif image uploaded to Photobucket (click on screenshot to enlarge):

Update: According to error7zero, "you can uploaded your (animated gif) files to Google Sites. Apparently, it is also easier to track.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In the screenshot above, I have highlighted the third tag wrongly. You can use it directly, but the image will link to Photobucket homepage, and not to your image or any other sites you want the image to link to. Further, the alt="some description" attribute describe Photobucket". It is the second tag (URL) that you should use for use in your profile, typing your own to display the image or to use the image as a hyperlink to another site, eg, your book you are trying to sell on Amazon, etc. However, if you are not familiar with using the tag to display images, the third tag (highlighted) you can just copy and paste into your Blogger post editor window to display the image, and if you wish, edit the target URL to link to any site of your choice and edit the alt="" attribute to some description of your image. The HTML have already been prepared for you and you don't need to know any HTML

For blogging purposes, only the second and third box is relevant. The IMG code (one of the BBB code normally only used in bulletin boards) where you can just copy-paste the IMG code into a message and post in a bulletin board to display the image.

For displaying animated .gif images, you MUST use the EDIT HTML mode for your post editor, otherwise you will not be able to write HTML properly.Silverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04599257849180366589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751467725300644977.post-37565099466482035212011-06-01T07:47:00.001-07:002011-06-01T07:47:54.231-07:00Windows Keyboard Shortcuts for Mozilla Firefox

They can take awesome quality photos at large resolutions, so even beginners can be very proud of their portfolio. That’s great, but when you want to send your latest vacation photos over email, you wish they were smaller. Here are two free applications which will help you batch resize your photos without any hassle. Both programs work with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 operating systems.

Image Resizer Powertoy Clone for Windows 7
The Image Resizer Powertoy was originally designed for Windows XP. This program is a clone that works with newer versions of Windows, Windows 7 included.

As you can see from the above screenshot, the application is integrated with the Windows Explorer menu. After clicking “Resize Pictures”, you’ll be able to either choose one of the four preset sizes or input your custom size.
The application can be downloaded for free from http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/

Fotosizer
Small and easy to use, Fotosizer is a good choice if all you want to do with your photos is to resize them in order to make them good for email attachments, photo sharing websites or discussion forums posting. The software allows you to add images one by one, but, if needed, you can add a whole folder at once, with or without its subfolders.

You can resize the photos either to specific height and width in pixels or by a percentage of the initial values. There are a few optional settings: picture rotation, black & white, sepia or negative.
Here’s How To Fix It.When I switched from Windows XP to Windows 7, I was happy I didn’t need to install any drivers. The new operating system just recognized everything (less the printer, but that’s another story). However, there was a minor glitch: the front panel audio jack stopped working. That was a bit annoying, because I wanted to have the speakers plugged in the rear jack and the headphones in the front jack, so I can use whatever I wish without needing to plug and unplug cables all the time.
The first thing to try was to check if Realtek has any Windows 7 drivers. I downloaded the latest Realtek High Definition Audio Codecs from here then installed the package. Everything worked fine, except that I got no result, the Realtek audio manager didn’t seem to detect my headphones. I found a solution in Tom’s Hardware Forum (click on the photo to enlarge it):

Unfortunately my version of the Realtek driver didn’t look like the one in the screenshot above, so I needed to try something else. There was no option to disable the front panel jack detection.
Then I thought I might need some updated drivers for the motherboard, but because I couldn’t remember anything else than it’s ASUS, I went back to reading discussion forums to see what else I could try. I found the solution in the previously mentioned forum:

Entered BIOS setup (restart your computer and press Del to enter Setup while seeing this message displayed)

Selected CHIPSET

The Front Panel audio configuration offers two possible options – select AC97, then save and exit BIOS

It worked for me but there were people in that forum who said it wasn’t good for them. Anyway, if you don’t know what else to do, you can give it a try, too.Silverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04599257849180366589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751467725300644977.post-52327140932415909652011-06-01T07:17:00.003-07:002011-06-01T07:17:44.263-07:0010 Reasons Why Barbecue Smokers Are Better Than Grills
I haven’t ordered it yet because I have a hunch Amazon is not going to deliver it here. I’ll see if there are any good local alternatives. Another reason for giving it a second thought is that I discovered an electric smoker which looks good as well: the Bradley BTIS1 Automatic BBQ Smoker. Before deciding which one to choose, I still want to go to a home and garden shop and ask the assistants for some guidance. I’ll let you know all the secrets of choosing barbecue smokers when I’ll discover them, don’t worry.
Anyway, a friend asked me what’s the reason I’m not happy with a grill. I am happy with my grill, but…

Specialized barbecue smokers allow temperature control, which means that you avoid over-cooking or under-cooking your food. Digital smokers set the temperature with high precision. However, even analogue ones do a great job with this, plus they save you a couple hundred dollars at least.

Bullet bbq smokers take up less space than a regular grill. That’s because such smokers usually have two cooking sections stacked on top of each other, so you can cook the same amount of food in half the space.

Smokers allow whole turkey cooking, which is not possible or very hard with regular grills. If the bird is too big, it’s frequent to overcook it on the exterior while still raw deep inside. This is not healthy and it’s not too appealing, either.

If properly insulated, smokers can be used to cook outside even in rain and wind or in winter time. Why give up your barbecue habits only because of weather caprices? Well, if a tornado is announced, you better go for indoors cooking, but a little bit of wind or a few drops of rain shouldn’t make you change plans.

Bullet smokers feature a water pan which helps keeping the meat moist and juicy.

The water pan can be filled with beer or with herbs, in order to add various flavors to the smoked meat.

Barbecue smokers allow you enjoy slow cooking, because you can set them up on low heat, then do your stuff or take a nap and come back when the food is done. It is hard to have constant low heat on a barbecue grill.

With a bbq smoker, you can make the meat just fall apart. You can’t get that on a regular grill. Or at least I’m not able to get it.

By using various types of wood pellets, you can give the food various flavors. Prime ribs, brisket, Boston butt, pork shoulder, fish or even cheese, all your favorite foods can be cooked “with a twist” which will make them original each and every time. A little flavored smoke does the trick.

Most smokers are set and forget. You can set them up, then go to sleep and wake up to the wonderfully cooked food. Even electric ones which use briquettes to generate smoke can go on for about 8 hours automatically before needing refueling.

Any electric smoker can successfully argue that. There can be smoke, even without a fire.
As much as I like charcoal barbecue smokers, I took a look at several electric ones, just in case I change my mind about buying the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. I liked the Bradley BTIS1 Original Fully Automatic 4-Rack Outdoor Food Smoker and I’m going to tell you why in this review.
The Bradley barbecue smoker enables both hot smoking and cold smoking. Cold smoking is great for foods like cheese or fish. The temperature control lever is much easier to control than the coal quantity and the ventilation on charcoal smokers. At least this is what I understood from reading other people’s reviews about various barbecue smoker types. I find buying a smoker more difficult than I’ve thought. The more I read, the more I want to know. I hope to make up my mind before the fall, though.
The Bradley smoker features 4 racks and a 2,288 cubic inch interior. This is enough room to cook large quantities of food. It’s awesome for big parties or for cooking for a big family. It might be a bit too big for me, so I’m still not sure I prefer this to the WSM bullet smoker. What I like about this one though, is that it looks like a little refrigerator. As far as I’ve read, the materials are good quality: epoxy steel with aluminum interior.
The cooking element has a power of 500 Watts and the smoking element has 125 Watts. The smoker can heat up to 280 F. The temperature is easier to control than in case of traditional smokers, thus recommending it to beginners in the art of food smoking. This easiness comes with a small downside, though: it takes about one hour to heat up to the maximum and if you open the door the temperature drops quite fast. You shouldn’t be checking on your food too often.
The “smoke without fire” system is very convenient. The wood-flavored bisquettes will burn for 20 minutes each. As they get consumed, the next bisquettes advance in line, allowing for up to 8 hours without refueling. Besides, cleaning is easier, compared to charcoal smokers.
The tray and drip bowl will help you collect drippings during the cooking process. You can then use them for sauce or you can just discard them. Anyway, this simple feature makes your life easier when it comes to cleaning the smoker.
The Bradley BTIS1 stays cool on the outside, which is great if you have naughty children roaming around.
Most of them are positive. It looks like Bradley take it very seriously when it comes to customer satisfaction:

The wood pucks that generate the smoke burn for about 20 minutes each. Someone on the Bradley forum site estimated that it costs about $1 an hour to smoke the meat. I had a small problem with the feeder when I first got the unit. The wood pucks were not always being fed every 20 minutes. When I asked about on the forum, one of the Bradley representatives called me (imagine, representatives taking the initiative and calling). They had me make a small adjustment and all worked perfectly after that.
Some users advise buying an Auber Instruments PID for getting excellent results:

My number one suggestion is that anyone buying the Bradley should opt for an extra 160 bucks and get the Auber PID. You will have an excellent combo unit far better than the digital.
Another raving review:

I’ve cooked several huge pork-shoulder roasts & I keep falling in love, over & over again with this purchase. I’ll never go out to eat expensive BBQ again! Even with the expense if the bisquettes, it’s SO worth it! I mean, I used to go out & pay like $50.00 for 2 slabs of ribs, salads & sodas…
This is from somebody who seemed to encounter problems in controlling the temperature, but is still happy:

So far I have used it twice for smoking pork shoulder. Both times it has come out perfect. The controller is not the most accurate, but there are many mods out there that overcome that.
I won’t quote from negative reviews, as I found the number of great ones to be overwhelming. You can read all of them on Amazon if you are interested.
To make a long story short: I like this barbecue smoker. My problem is that I don’t know what to choose between the Bradley BTIS1 and the Weber Smokey Mountain. My Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker Review

Which is best: BBQ smoker or grill?

I love slow-cooked barbecue and smoked meat. Years ago, my father made a bbq smoker which we used for a while. It was fun, but the smoking process was rather messy and many times the meat had a too strong smoke flavor. I want excellent results each time, so I’m not going to use homemade smokers anymore. I want to buy one. This is how I got into barbecue smokers research which led me to this review of the Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 18 1/2 Inch Smoker. I tend to trust Weber cookers more than no-name ones, because of the excellent reputation they have amongst long-time users. I don’t want to buy a new smoker every other year, not even every five years. I want it to be good for at least 10 years, if not longer.
To summarize, here’s what I took into consideration in my research:

Why barbecue smokers are better than grills

The smoker holds the heat consistently with almost no effort.

The vaporizing water in bbq smokers adds moisture to the meat, keeping it juicy.

Smokers use the slow-cooking method, which means you can leave the food unattended after the initial setup.

Smoked meat is more tender and tastes better than grilled meat. The taste is worth all the extra time required by smoker cooking.

What to look for when buying a barbecue smoker
Convenience:
Choose the smoker type that suite you best. Charcoal smokers are awesome, but if you don’t want to deal with ashes and stuff, you might want to get an electric one.
Being able to control the air-flow, and therefore the temperature, is crucial for obtaining the best results. Smoking is tricky, not getting the temperature high enough will ruin your food. A temperature that is too high will result in burning the exterior of the meat.
Capacity:
Taking into consideration the long cooking times, it’s nicer to be able to load everything you need for a meal at once.
Durability:
A barbecue smoker is a relatively big purchase, not in terms of money, but in terms of transport and installation. You want yours to last a lifetime. This is why it’s wiser to choose durable materials such as porcelain-enameled steel and nickel-plated cooking grates.
My two finalists were:
Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 18 1/2 Inch Smoker
Weber 731001 Smokey Mountain 22.5 Inch Smoker
After comparing their features, I am more prone to choose the 18.5 inch one. It is cheaper and it has enough room inside for a ham and an average size turkey, for instance.

Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker

Weber Smokey Mountain is a charcoal smoker. Charcoal smokers are better than electric smokers because they give the meat that nice, mouthwatering, authentic smokehouse flavor.
Slow-cooking calls for patience. Cooking times range between 6 and 16 hours. This means such a barbecue party needs advance planning. What I like about the Weber 721001 smoker is that it has a lot of space inside. The interior is divided by two nickel-plated cooking grates. The two cooking sections allow cooking a whole turkey and a ham at the same time. This is awesome. You can have everything ready just in time for your festive dinner or barbecue party. It’s also nice that you’ll only have to clean the smoker once. I know cleaning is easy, because the Weber Smokey Mountain is made from porcelain-enameled premium-grade steel. Even so, I’m still happy to work less on cleaning, whenever possible. There’s no need to wash the WSM on the inside. A simple grill brush will do a wonderful job.

Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker - inside view

Another nice feature of this Weber Smokey Mountain cooker is the two-gallon water pan. The water will turn into steam during the cooking process, allowing the meat to stay moist and juicy. This is especially helpful when cooking cheaper cuts of meat such as beef brisket.
The Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 18 1/2 Inch Smoker is an updated version of an older model, the Weber 2820. Improvements were made based on user experience. The new model is probably one of the best smokers available at a reasonable price. These are the features I like most:

Built-in thermometer which makes it easy to check internal temperature

No-rust aluminum fuel door, large enough to make loading easy

Spring-loaded door latch with lever type handle, much safer than the previous version which had a round knob and no spring.

Heat-resistant nylon handle on the lid, much better than the previous model which was made of wood. This new handle stays cool to the touch. I like that because I hate to burn my fingers.

Individual vents on the bowl and lid control the air-flow and help the charcoal to burn longer. The meats will come out more tender and you’ll use less charcoal. You can control the temperature by the initial amount of coal you load into the smoker and by adjusting the air vents.

What others say about Weber barbecue smokers
I was impressed with the big number of Weber Smokey Mountain smokers positive reviews on Amazon. It looks like Weber is a very popular and appreciated brand among barbecue lovers. People who bought it wrote their own review and added photos of the product in use.
Here are a few excerpts:

“The Weber Smokey Mountain is a very well built and highly functional barbeque cooker. Like all Weber products that I’ve used it is designed well and looks like it will last many years.“

“ … very easy to use, retains heat wonderfully, much better than a smoker you’re going to get at your department store”

“Temperature regulation is a snap as is clean up.
